La Fondazione per il Sud Abstract: The aim of this essay is to focus the attention on the vitality and the centrality of the social role that nonprofit organizations carry out in the process of development of a society. In particular, what we want to highlight is the ability of the third sector to be placed like a vital propeller for a development which is able to renew the economic course to his social and civil root. We use two main topic, accompanied by a specific study of a nonprofit organization considered particularly significant for its ability to create added social value. The first topic regards the recognition of nonprofit organizations like social spaces that, together with the production of social goods and the providing of community benefit services, produce and put on trial cooperative and reciprocal resources, namely social capital. The second topic regards the ability of nonprofit organizations to ensure a development which pay attention to social cohesion, through the implementation of logic of subsidiarity that offer a strong social sustainability to the process of growth.
